Doodles vs Tangling: What's the Real Difference?

I'll often be teaching, and someone will say, "Oh, so it's like doodling. It's just got a fancy name". Doodles vs Tangling - an interesting conversation :)
I get why it looks that way from the outside. I used to say that too. Pen, paper, patterns, no rules about what it's supposed to become. But once you've sat with a tile (the square pieces of card we use) for twenty minutes, you can feel the difference, and it's worth spelling out.

Doodling is what your hand does while your mind is somewhere else entirely. You're on a phone call, sitting in a meeting, half listening, and your pen just wanders. There's no intention behind it. It's a nice enough habit, but you're 'mindlessly' drawing.
Tangling is different because it asks you to actually show up.

You choose a string (a pencil line to divide your tile into sections). You pick your patterns. You look, properly look, at where one line meets the next. It sounds small, but that's the whole point: when your eyes and your hand are both fully in it, there's no room left for the noisy, looping thoughts that usually fill the gaps.
That's the mindset shift as much as the art one. Doodling lets your mind drift off. Tangling brings you back into the present moment.
There's a rhythm to it too, if you let yourself hear it. The pen makes a quiet, steady sound against the paper, and after a while that sound becomes its own kind of quiet. I know, I sound nerdy, but I really love listening to the sounds. It makes me feel artsy lol.
Ask anyone who's tangled through a hard week, and they'll tell you: something shifts. They can't always explain how, but they know it, because they walk away feeling lighter than they did when they first sat down.

And if you're the sort of person who needs it to make sense on paper before you believe it: that's fine too. Once you understand what's actually happening (your brain settling into a focused, repetitive pattern instead of spiralling), it clicks. It's not woo. It's just attention, on purpose, instead of by accident.
So no, it's not just doodling with a fancy name. Doodling vs Tangling: Doodling is absence. Tangling is presence, wrapped up in something beautiful you made with your own hands.
If you fancy trying it for yourself, come along to a Tangle Emporium session and see what I mean. We are currently running a waitlist, so pop your name down to be the first to hear when it opens again.
You're also welcome to join the free part of the Tangle Emporium Hub any time, no pressure, just chat and share tangles. I'm going to be opening up one free Tangle Time Live session a month to non-members soon, so you can find out all about that in the Tangle Emporium Hub.
